I don't understand why everything has to be a series. This does not have an ending.

I really enjoyed reading this book and found myself not wanting to put it down between chapters regularly.

I decided I couldn't rate it higher than I have however for a couple reasons:

Firstly I couldn’t get onboard with the Atlas/Avery relationship. Too weird given she was 5 when he became her brother - very young - which made the whole thing a bit gross and not something I could root for. Secondly the ending was too open-ended for this to be entirely stand alone. The final chapter eluded to a sequel, by pointing out open questions a little too obviously, however this is the sort of book I think could have benefited from being stand alone personally.

Having said all that thought, I still gave it 4.25 as I really did enjoy reading it, I just had a couple qualms.

It's a phat no from me. I don't even feel the need to explain but here are things that made me cringe/not want to even own this book:

a) Incest vibes
"All her life she'd been hearing how beautiful she was - from teachers, boys, her parents. By now the phrase had lost all meaning. Atlas, her adopted brother, was the only one who knew better than to compliment her."
"On the other end of the call was Atlas, her brother - and the reason she never wanted to kiss anyone else."

If that isn't enough of a nope idk what is.

b) Love triangle

c) The following words: Halluci-lighter and eartennas

d) There's a character named Cord

A case of bury your gays and contains incest. Most of the shitty characters seem to also be BIPOC which is a red flag. Why are none of the shitty people white?

I would actually give this book 4.9 stars. I like really really loved it and I think it’s one of the greatest book I’ve ever read.
I’ve seen a lot of people compare this book to gossip girls and actually agree with them and in the best way possible except for this kind of invest  but I think this book has everything a book needs to keep the reader interested it’s got mystery kind of murder it has romance maybe less smut than what I’m used to lol but it had friendship and betrayalin MULTIPLE POVS which  I really loved as almost everything about this book I wouldn’t give it five stars because but  I think it’s very close to flawless

I wanted to enjoy this book slightly more than I did. It drew me in and was un-put-down-able, but more in the way a sketchy reality TV show is. The characters were vibrant and life-like, and while there were definitely some I rooted for, there were some that I was... less enamoured with, which is still strong characterization. I was hoping to find it a little less romance-y, but really, no major compalints. I think that it was simply not quite to my personal tastes.

Futuristic Gossip Girl? I wanted to love this, but it is so full of unexamined racism and biphobia, not to mention incest and a super glossed-over rape scene. It isn't often that I start a series and don't finish it, but this one is a BIG no from me.
