I don’t give five stars lightly, and I’m actually surprised that I ended up loving this so much.

This book was very different from what I was anticipating, and honestly, I’m so glad it was. While the premise intrigued me, as I read it I began to wonder how it was going to work, and if I was going to like it. However, I was really happy with the turn it took, and the ending it had.

This book was beautifully written, and the story was very easy to just fall into and feel completely immersed. And! I cried like a baby, which I never do from books! This one just really got to me, and I thought it was beautiful and poetic. I feel like I’m still so stuck in the aftershock of it that I can’t fully articulate all my feelings, but I highly recommend it!

I like this author’s books for the settings, descriptions of food, and magical realism that is unexplained, but they’re not feel good books if that’s what you’re looking for. This book is more reflective of life: ugly, real, and emotional. The true love story of this book is not the one you’d expect. It maybe deserves more stars, but I prefer a happier ending and a more satisfying resolution.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle is a novel about control, or rather the impossibility of control. Dannie Kohan says, “I believe in living by numbers.” The book opens with her engagement to the perfect man (David), and her being hired into the perfect job. That night she has a vision of five years in the future: having sex with Aaron. He does not fit her plan for her future. She does everything she can to prevent this vision from becoming a reality.

A novel on the illusion of control.
