Dubliners is best read a story at a time. I tried to binge it for class before and thought it was just okay. Once I had the time to slowly digest each story, I appreciated Joyce's writing so much more. Not every story is perfect, but I the ones I like, I absolutely love.

god this was so dull. and people’ll say “oh you just didn’t get it”. sure, that’s fine. maybe i just didn’t get it. but guess what i did get?? a severe headache and newfound resolve in my promise that i will NEVER read joyce :) unbearably pretentious. he’s just like beckett- another man with no ability to communicate with his readers, hiding behind a guise of intellectuality and “hidden meaning”. i am ranting but I don’t care. joyce  does not know how to write in a way that is engaging or accessible, so to hide that fact, just tries to make the reader feel stupid instead! or maybe he does know how, and just decides to write these insufferable stories to make himself feel like he’s any different from every other pretentious thomas aquinas/ibsen/homer wannabe. just because a book has big words and was written by a funny old man with an inflated ego does NOT mean it is “well written”. the literary canon has let me down here 💔

It's funny how a bunch of stories set during a specific period can hold such timeless relevance more than a century later.
