After reading this book in its entirety, I really feel for Britney. Everything from being sexualized as a child, having an alcoholic father, many emotionally abuse family members, forced institutionalization, and being torn down by the media.

You can tell this is written by someone who still needs a lot of healing and probably has severe PTSD. I'm glad she was able to open up about her experiences. She doesn't go too deep in this book, but maybe in due time she will write more. Either way, she has her life back and she can do whatever the heck she wants.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first half of this book, but I think I "get it" now. It follows a timeline of her life. It begins with very simple writing, not many strong opinions, and brushes off negative events. But as the story progresses and she gets older, I can tell her identity, thoughts, and mannerisms shift. Britney seems like a fundamentally sweet person, and the things that happened to her were so not fair.

with like a serious check on the content warnings of the book (particularly depression, manipulative/controlling/toxic family dynamics, forced institutionalization, emotional abuse) — well worth the read. especially for those who have lived with her in the public eye. just a reminder that there's so much we don't know that goes on for people we think we know. a thoughtful reflection on her own life and also just bringing to light the horrors of our conservatorship and institutionalizing system. what a relief for this book to end the way it does. may we all find a way to bring joy back into our lives in the face of our past.
