This is just ok. The prose is pretty good but I'm not sure the author felt inspired to write it. He made some odd choices: he isolated the main character all thru the story including the climax when the point of her story was feeling like she didn't belong with any family? Also Ulivar was a compelling character in the beginning with a great twist and motivation but then he shoves him out of the way for the entire second half of the novel. Weird choices as I say. Also it could have been epic with the gates and forbidden magic and the most interesting magical character was dismissed in the first couple chapters.

Would have been helpful to know that there was an appendix that explained the who, what, when, etc of the world that I was jumping into at the end of the ebook, but that was my problem. Hahaha But after just diving in, it was really enjoyable and had wonderful world building. I'm definitely going to check out more from this author.

Very well written. Engaging characters. So much so, that I felt connected to them. I wish the book never ended. :(

I need more non-romanticized stories about the Fae as horrific nonhuman entities.

This novel was a major surprise for me, and I'm honestly surprised it's flying under the radar as much as it is! This is a medieval, loosely Scottish (or Irish?) dark epic fantasy from Tor, but it also knows how to have fun - there are clear modern sensibilities and some really charming scenes, including a standup comedy show and a character who secretly writes romance novels. Daughter of Redwinter isn't afraid to be a bit silly, but it balances the tone expertly with intense action sequences, an appropriate amount of gore, and a dash of horror. The world we inhabit here feels very lived-in, Raine is a deeply flawed protagonist rendered with exquisite compassion, and her story is full of surprises.

I did feel that the secondary characters weren't quite fleshed out enough, particularly Esher, who fell pretty flat as a love interest. There were also some moments that got a little too cheesy for me - you know, when a character says something that's supposed to be super cool and badass, but it's just corny, and you cringe? There were maybe too many of those. But overall I really enjoyed this and can't wait for the sequel coming this Fall.

I really wanted to like this one. It started off strong but the middle is just so slow and boring. I heard it really picks up near the end but I just can't push myself through it
