This book had such a fun set up and I absolutely loved our main characters. I did however find it to be a tiny bit repetitive and I was not as invested into the side characters or overall storyline as I would have liked to be. Overall, a really fun read but I probably won't be picking up the next one.

Harry Potter but without the watchful elders and  with a school full of hideous monsters. I enjoyed the world of Scholomance, but I struggled to become invested in the story because the world building was technical and repetitive at times but I understand the purpose behind that. El, the main character, kept me reading -- she's funny and her inner monologues are enchanting. I do plan to read the second in the series.

the writing style was in itself pretty easy to read (most of the time) but the incessant infodumps and world building made it thoroughly exhausting to read, to the point i feel drained? i enjoyed the story but it was a real slog to get through, despite reading it in just a day, so this just… exists in a weird space for me where i can recognise i liked it but there’s just something so off about it
