A very charming story that was both witty and suspenseful, alternating between detailed world building, dry humor, and well-timed dramatic reveals. Magic weaves with science to create a very unique setting that acts as a character unto itself.

Naomi Novik's story makes poignant remarks on prevalent real-world topics such as classism and privilege, through the lense of a magical society controlled by a fortunate (and greedy) few. She delivers genuine complex emotion as her characters grapple with their anger, their uncertainty, and at the end of the day, their humanity.

4.5 stars because I'm not sure if the author hired a sensitivity consultant or not; there were a couple small moments I didn't feel great about. Additionally, I wasn't sold on the design of the school in this book. Not the literal design, but more the way it was designed and how it's been handled since.

I listened to this as an audiobook and that worked really well for me because its in big parts Els inner monologue.
The worldbuilding & school in general was interesting and definitely different to anything else I've read. But the thing I enjoyed most we're the friendships. Not just between El & Orion but also between the girls. I love the found family trope and I hope that will become even more important in the next books in the series.
The magic system was also ver interesting. To me the whole book felt like a magical Hunger Games more than Harry Potter (which I've often seen it be compared to).
I listened to it in a day so I was definitely hooked and didn't get bored. I'm interested to see what happens in the following books though and if the message in the end has any real meaning or if it's just in there for the shock value.

What a book! The details are fantastic. The way the author takes time to describe all of the creatures in the school is beautiful. The way she unfolded this story was enchanting. Galadriel is attending the school of Scholomance.  She needs to learn spells to survive in the world.  This school is the most dangerous place for students.  They must watch out for monsters and horrible creatures. They should never be alone. The school is magic and provides the students with what they need at a practice of course. Orion is fearlessly Saving his fellow students from the creatures in the school. He's attracted to Galadriel and becomes her personal Bodyguard.  Plunging into danger at every turn. He belongs to the New York coven which Galadriel wants to join.

Pretty damn fun. I liked the relationship between El and Orion, there was a nice push and pull to it between snark and genuine kindness. I enjoyed El finally figuring out how to make friends, I kinda struggled to get a good idea of the mals within the school, the names and descriptions all blend together. Overall, it kinda gave me magical Survivor vibes, like the TV series, where everyone is playing this meta social game, which is a neat idea.

While I loved the world of this book and the possibilities it presented, the story itself was weirdly paced. I felt like it spent a LOT of time building up to a major, menacing reveal, and then the climax was told with the same weight as the rest of the story, the ending felt abrupt and jarring, and overall, it just seemed like a lot of buildup for not much payoff.
