This whole fairy tale revolves around kindness and teamwork. The Queen and King work together to solve their fertility woes, the Wooden Robot and the Log Princess work together to get home, the Beetles work together with the forest creatures to reach the witch: is there a better fairy tale that beats this particular horse? I don't think so. And the threads of kindness and grace that twines through this story add a truly heartwarming element: the Wooden Robot shares his torso with the Beetles, the Log Princess readily forgives her brother for a moment of forgetfulness, and when those forest creatures are asked for their help they give it with nary a second thought.

One particular highlight, and something that would make a great extended imaginative activity, were the little adventure cards that described both the Robot, and then the Princess' trials as they trekked home. From beginning to end this was delightful, and the illustrations just sing. Meticulous and detailed (so many LINES!), diverse and expressive, there was a lot to enjoy here.

The five-year-old really liked it.

Cute take on a fairy tale about a log princess and her robot brother and how they overcome adversity and look out for each other. This book gave me warm fuzzies and made me want to cheer for the heroes of the story...the beetles.
