“Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.”

I read this for my young adult literature course and did not really like the story. Honestly, I am not sure how Disney even made this into a movie.

There's not much I can say about Alice in Wonderland that hasn't been said before, so I'll just focus on this beautiful graphic novel.

First of all, the authors made an amazing job of translating the book into a graphic novel. I had the "written" edition with me and I checked each and every page of it against this book and you don't lose anything. What I mean is that some adaptations lose half the original text, and this was not the case. The title states it's the complete Alice and is certainly is.

As for the illustrations, they are amazing, full of detail! The colors come out as matte and subdued (I read the book on my computer), but it only makes them more beautiful and accord to the book.
But I have to say my least favorite character was Alice, as she is depicted in a very "anime" form: big eyes, turned up nose, little mouth and it seems like a completely different style from other characters, like the Queen of Hearts

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

What a simply perfect graphic novel adaptation! Yes friends, this is an actual adaptation that sticks to the classic that we all know and love. No retelling, no reimagining, just adding gorgeous illustrations to an already wonderful and whimsical story. I can't tell you how giddy I was upon realizing that Alice's adventures would be intact. There's something so satisfying about seeing things that were only in your imagination, brought to life by people who understand how important they are.

Leah Moore's artwork is a little less colorful than I originally expected, but the more I read the more I realized how well it fit the story. The muted colors lend themselves well to the dreamlike quality of Alice's rather strange encounters. I must admit, Alice herself really steals the show in terms of character illustration. She's utterly adorable, which makes her that much easier to follow along with. She is set against characters with mad grins, warped faces, and slightly terrifying bodies. That beautiful contrast between her world, and the one she has found at the bottom of the rabbit hole, is perfection.

I do believe that this would be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of anyone who has a soft spot for Alice in Wonderland. Journeying along with her, reliving the magic of Wonderland, it's all made that much more satisfying by the addition of these gorgeous panels. I just goes to show, in the right hands a graphic novel adaptation can be brilliant. I'm just glad Leah Moore understood that.

I received a free copy of this Graphic Novel via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is just going to be a mini-mini review, because I'm pretty sure everyone is aware of the Alice in Wonderland story. You know how much I love Alice so as soon as I saw this on Netgalley I freaked out because Alice + Graphic Novel = HELL YES. I know the story off by heart so I was so excited to see the art because Wonderland is such an incredible place. I was really let down by it though.

I hate saying I don't like the art in graphic novels and comics because I am not an Artist and can barely draw a stick person. I couldn't connect to this art at all though and I feel like the art is what would have REALLY made this. I thought it was going to be bright and colourful and similar to the Disney movie, but it was just... dull? I'm glad it wasn't a carbon copy to the Alice art that exists, but I don't think this style does the world and characters Lewis Carrol created justice. There were a few panels that I liked, but otherwise it just wasn't for me. I did really love the Mad Hatter / Tea Party art though. It was probably my favourite.

The Complete Alice in Wonderland
Not a fan of the left page, but I enjoyed the right page. Unfortunately, there were more pages I didn't like than ones I did. Images via Dynamite Entertainment.

Although this again would have been a 3.5 rating I decided to round it up to a 4 because... it's Alice in Wonderland. I have no complaints whatsoever about the writing. It's literally the entire book. Everything is included and none of the story suffered whatsoever. I feel like that can be a problem with other book to graphic novels adaptions, but this one did it PERFECTLY. I just wish the art style was one I liked because then this would have been like a 10/5. If you love Alice as much as I do, though, and like the art then this is a must!

4.5 stars.

I love Alice in Wonderland. I love nonsensical, crazy things. This graphic novel adaptation did not disappoint. This adaptation stayed very true to the original story which I really appreciated. I liked how the pictures were used as an enhancement of the original story rather than a way to change the plot.

The art style is absolutely beautiful. It gave off a very Japanese/manga feel which I loved. When I first started reading, I was slightly startled by the darkness of the drawings because it gave off a quite sinister feel. However, I very quickly grew to love the art because I love art in general and the darker palette was absolutely enchanting to look at.

Overall, I definitely recommend this adaptation whether you are revisiting this tale or if it is your first time! It was very easy to read, was true to the original story, and the drawings enhanced the reading experience tremendously.

DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this book via Net Galley. This did not affect my opinion in any way.
