I really liked how this book started out. Our Main Character Amina, a middle-aged, single mother, retired female pirate really intrigued me, because it is something you dont see that often. And the writing style paints great pictures and is very atmospheric. Her crew and their banter was also one of the points I really enjoyed.
However as much as I like the beginning, it really went downhill throughout the book (maybe because the start gave me higher expectations xD). Aminas choices made less and less sense to me and her success depended on too many coincidences. Some of the deeper conflicts (mainly the whole Asif-topic) got "solved" in a dissapointingly easy way, that felt a little bit shallow.

Overall this was an okay read for me. I enjoyed the writing and the general idea behind most of the characters.

Just as an extra info. As a person that really doesnt like gore, I found some of the descriptions on the edge of being too much. But I recognize that i am probably a bit on the sensitive side when it comes to violence and gorey stuff xD

This was super fun. I love Amina and the mythos and pirate vibes. I'm excited to see more, specifically in the relationship developments with her family. It was a great audiobook that made the reveal at the end have an extra layer. Though I kind of wish I can read it physically and likely will on the reread which may bump it up to 5 stars.

The book kicks off a little slow but is definitely worth the initial pacing. The cast was incredibly charming and I will be rotating them around in my brain for the foreseeable future!! I felt it was well structured and the prose for both casual and action packed scenes was very charming.

Author of the Daevabad Trilogy, S.A. Chakraborty, brings us back to this beautiful and dangerous world through the story of a middle-aged, human, ex-pirate: Amina al-Sirafi.

The name "Amina al-Sirafi" strikes fear into the hearts of many due to her scandalous pirating career. Now, she's settled at home with her mother and daughter. She should be content. But when the wealthy mother of a former crewman shows up at her door begging Amina into finding her granddaughter, she thinks it's a sign from God to have one last adventure with her friends before she officially retires. Little does she know that this task will lead her and her crew into mysteries and legends Amina could've only dreamed of.

S.A. Chakraborty took elements of a classic pirate story--a diverse and fun-loving crew, a quest for treasure, fearsome creatures--and added her own twist to it. The Daevabad Trilogy has to be one of my favorite fantasy series, so diving back into this world was so much fun.

As a white person, it's so refreshing to have story based in Middle Eastern/Indian Ocean culture. I had to forget everything I knew about the typical (western based) mythology so I could truly learn about these mythologies while I listened. These narrators were fantastic and I truly enjoyed listening to them.
