Skunk and Badger is a beautifully written and illustrated book about friendship, personal growth, and acceptance. Due out 15th Sept 2020 from Workman on their Algonquin Young Readers imprint, it's 136 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is a rollicking and fun book with surprisingly deep takeaways. Aimed at young readers circa 8-12 years old, there are solid lessons about friendship, personal growth, kindness, boundaries, and learning to work together.

Although ostensibly written as a read-alone for 8-12 year olds, this would also be a superlative choice for a read-along or library circle/activity read (maybe with a question and answer discussion afterwards). It would also be a great choice for a read-to-me adult/child bedtime story. There is also wide scope for some silly voices and sound effects.

Five stars. Charming, original, well written and beautifully illustrated.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

“Gentle and kind is the way I would like the world to be. I hope it will be that way. But Badger, if it were true that kindness and gentleness were the best way to win a kingdom-or win anything at all-wouldn't everyone do it? Not everyone is gentle and kind. Even I myself find it hard to be kind and gentle. Sometimes I get mad. Also, I am a small animal, and being small is difficult.” (p. 47)

This was such a cute story, very quaint and nostalgic.

Your typical odd-couple book, with some cute animals thrown in. The length and reading level will make it a good fit for ambitious young readers looking for titles that are longer and more sophisticated than some of the other beginning chapter books on the market, but the overall vibe seemed a little too old-fashioned to resonate with enough readers to find an audience in my library.

This is a cute little odd couple story for children that also rather deftly handles internalized prejudice (!). Much love to Skunk.

I would have loved to use this as a read aloud in my class lessons but I think the language constructs and way it is written would be better suited to middle grades.

Skunk and Badger are two of the most wonderful and quirky individuals that I have encountered in children's fiction in years. This is a fabulous book but is probably best as a shared reading experience between adults and their little ones. There are just so many inside jokes for the bigs to chuckle at as the scenes unfold.

if you love Wind in the Willows, Frog and Toad, or Winnie the Pooh, this is the book for you; a sweet, charming story of unlikely roommates turned friends.
