"Don't doubt my courage, Walter, it's my weakness that cries, not me."

"Behold the cause, in my Heart--behold, in the image of Marian Halcombe, the first and last weakness of Fosco's life!"

I just wish Marian had a bigger role to play aside from supporting Laura in the end. Walter bored me with his cautionary language at certain points during his second narrative. Her journal entries were the most sophisticated and entertaining parts of the story, aside from Fosco's narrative (still, in which he praises her!). I guess Collins' purpose was to point out this typicality in Victorian female characters and in women during the time?

The main issue with this book is that it constantly piles misfortune on its main characters and thwarts any of their efforts to combat them at every possible point. This means that by the time you do reach the end, the conclusion and the justice it delivers feels like it barely makes up for what the characters (and the reader) have suffered.

wow. just wow. I've never read anything like this before. I'm not really a mystery person (I don't really know why) but this book. woah. my jaw has physically dropped at some parts bc of the plot twists it was quite insane. this was a magical book omg I love it so so much. I'm so glad I read this book. legit I love Wilkie collins' writing so much. when the woman in white first appeared I was genuinely like a little bit spooked LOL. it was intense and it ugh it was just such a good mystery. I thought near the end it would slow down too bc that's usually what happens at the end of books but no. girl this kept that intense pacing all the way till the end it was crazy. that was definitely a journey. I won't say much to give the mystery away
