Tired of turkey Thanksgiving books?? Give the turkey a rest and read Balloons Over Broadway! This book is a great gateway into STEAM activities and Social Studies lessons.

Every year I love watching the Macy’s Day Parade on tv. I enjoyed this book as a reader and as a teacher!

Balloons over Broadway is a wonderfully written and grateful book! It is about Tony Sarg, the man behind the giant balloons in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sarg started as a marionette who made puppets with strings. He made displays every year for Macy's Department Store. The story owner was so impressed with Tony, that he asked tony to design something for a parade on Thanksgiving. With thinking, tony has an idea of how to make the balloons, and the rest is history!

A really cool subject, but it didn't work for me as a children's book. It tried to cram in too much information, the art was busy, and the voice was had a patronizing tone, like an adult trying to explain something to a 5 year-old; which is what this book is trying to do, I get it. I think it would've worked better for slightly older kids. For the young age it is aimed at, it's not fun enough.

This is a biography but it would be good for Thanksgiving storytime if the reader didn't read every word.

This book is great! My students and I learned so much from this book. I had no idea how the Macy Parade even started.

The only reason this book was not 5 stars was because the vocabulary is a little hard in this book. We had to talk through a couple of words.

The illustrations in this book are so great. I particularly liked the little drawers labeled "Gizmos", "Doo-dahs" and the like.

I think the story of the Puppeteer and the Parade will be popular with kids of all ages.

I adore this book! It's everything a book should be: imaginative, whimsical, informative... It's always fascinating to me to learn about such wonderful "unsung heroes", creative people who made a difference in their own way. Millions of people have benefited from Sarg's genius. The use of various media, the explanations, the story... it all adds up to my favorite for the Caldecott.

Another children's picture book biography of someone I've never heard of. Pretty good writing. Good enough art, especially considering it had a style I don't like all that much. An okay afterword. There could have been more here but it was fine. 3.5 of 5.
