Newly adopted dog wants to make his owner proud of him, but makes a mess of things. When he knows he’s in trouble he digs his way to get away, to only get in trouble. The other dogs help, and when he knows he is wanted, he fixes his mistakes and becomes the best dog his owner ever had.

I grew up with this book, so I love it. I read it to my niblings all the time and they love it. It's kind of a messed up story though. A dog who is ridiculed for not being able to dig, then shamed for when he over does it. Then finally worked like a dog (forgive the pun) at the end. So not a really very valuable book in terms of its life lessons, but still a fun read all around. 4 stars.

This was really cute. My son asked for it specifically. :) It ends a bit abruptly and some of the rhymes are iffy, but it’s fun.

After rereading this twice in the past few days, I recall distinctly why this was my absolute favorite beginning reader book as a child. The touching tale of a pet store dog who finds a home but doesn't know how to "dog," The Digging-est Dog explores what it means to have a family, how it can sometimes be taxing to try to fit in, and why friends are always important. I wish I could read this to a classroom full of young minds.
