Great companion to [b:One Dead Spy|13591161|Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales One Dead Spy|Nathan Hale|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1343090433s/13591161.jpg|19179194]. I wasn't sure how having the Revolutionary War era characters narrating a Civil War story would work, but it actually flows really well. Lots of great history. Lots of humor.

Did I mention that this series is by someone ALSO named Nathan Hale who was born exactly 200 years after the spy died because that would be a true statement.

I actually learned things in this book ?? about boats in the civil war ?? okay

I am not a graphic novel fan, but this one is pretty good. Nathan Hale is writing in an "Arabian Night" kind of story where the narrator, the revolutionary spy Nathan Hale is telling his British executioners american historical stories to postpone his inevitable death. There is a lot of good information here about the civil war naval battles of the ironclads and it is done with lots of humor to help lighten up this war story. I will be looking for the rest of the series to add to my 5th grade classroom library.

Nathan Hale (the author, not the spy) does a great job of making history fun for kids. This is a great book to give to young readers who have any interest in the Civil War, American History, or battles in general. Heck, even if you're worried they are *losing* interest in the above, give it to them so they can find out about this historical adventure.

The premise of the Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales series is that Nathan Hale (the revolutionary war spy, not the author) was hit by a magical history book and now has all of American history in his brain. He uses his new skill to stall the hangman's noose, telling them stories of the "future". In "Big Bad Ironclad", Hale tells them about the battles between the Merrimack and the Monitor during the Civil War.

Filled with lots of humor and action, this is a great pick for fans of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and those younger kids who ask for "books about war" but don't want to read the dry tomes in the adult non-fiction collection.
