I absolutely adore this series. I hope Alistair becomes a regular. This mystery was great. While the answer to the mystery did not surprise me, the bits and pieces of it added depth. Looking forward to the future stories uncovering the depth of Viv’s secrets and personal life.

3.5 stars - I like the characters in this series, but this installment seemed a bit light in investigating and not as good as the prior books in this series. Scarlett's "no dating for a year" resolution is wearing thin, especially when it seems she has met her soul mate in Harrison. Something important comes out about Viv, but then the book ends abruptly on a cliffhanger. I don't care for endings that are up-in-the-air like this, but I fell for it and will probably pick up the next book when it comes out to find out what happens next for Viv, Scarlett, and Harrison.

This was a good addition to this series. I've enjoyed these all. I like the tension between the characters and glad we FINALLY got a bit of an answer about Viv at the end. I still find it hard to believe that a milliner has enough business to stay open, but what do I know? High fashion, I do not have.

Light and fluffy and generally enjoyable. I don't like the main character as much as those in McKinlay's other two series, but it is a fun cast of characters. The dragged out love story is getting tiresome, so I hope it's resolved in the next book. The mystery's ending seemed odd to me. I hope the next book is a bit better!

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Not my favorite. I've really enjoyed the Hat Shop Mystery series, but At The Drop of a Hat just did not live up to my expectations. The mystery itself seemed very halfhearted with a lack of reasonable suspects and the story seemed to revolve more around the romantic relationships of Scarlett and her cousin Vivian than the murder.

The third installment in the Hat Shop Mystery series keeps us on Portobello Road in London at Mim’s Whims, a hat shop run by two cousins who inherited it from their grandmother. Vivian is the artist and Scarlett runs the shop. As luck would have it, while going to visit a potential client, Scarlett encounters another dead body and becomes embroiled in this case as well based on her gut instinct that the client didn’t kill anyone. No new and interesting locations in this book but Scarlett’s love interest heats up. And while we don’t learn anything new about the regular, ancillary characters, Vivian has a reveal in the final pages that will introduce its own mystery in book four.
