In comparison to my other 3 star rating, this is definitely a 2.5 because it wasn't interesting. The only reason I thought about continuing the series (I won't) was because I loved Chaol and was interested to know more about his character.

Finally embarking on my last SJMass series. So far, so good but slow going on the plot. I guess to be expected with 9 books in the series. We do love SJs character dialogue to make you feel like you’re in it with them plus the classic love triangle…

**Reread August 2016
Reread August 2015** still love it the second time around!!!

I really, really enjoyed this book. Many of you already know that I'm a huge fan of fantasy and this book didn't let me down. The main character, Celaena MADE this book. She is a fierce, assassin who has a much softer, lonelier side as well. I love that we got to read about her fighting and climbing walls (and just being overall really awesome) and then we see her all dressed up in elaborate gowns. (I loved all the pretty dress talk.)

I really enjoyed the relationship between her and her instructor, the Captain of the Guard, Chaol. Dorian was an enjoyable character to read about as well with his love of reading and puppies. I think anyone will feel sympathy for him for being related to such a disgrace of a man, his father, the King. I love the bits of magic that was thrown in this book with Wyrdmarks, the Fae, and Queen Elena.

At this point I know that there are four novellas out about her past life and I believe there's to be a bind-up of those plus a fifth coming out in March. I can't wait to start reading the second book, Crown of Midnight as well!

1st Read 2016: 4 stars
2nd Read 2018: 4 stars I really enjoyed my re read of this book! I tried to read it through a more analytical lens and it did not dampen my experience, in fact I think it heightened it. I found my self picking up on all of these hints and references to future novels and it is mind blowing to see how plotted out the some of the future plot points were at this early stage. I found myself this time around disliking Chaol more than last time and I know that his character doesn’t start to improve (for me at least) until ToD, so looking forward to that. My copy of this book has completely come away from its binding and is written in and tabbed and well loved. This series is my favourite after Harry Potter and reading this book again reminds me of why.
