For OPL Top Shelf: A must-read for any fan of Sondheim, musical theater, or the process of creating art.James Lapine, who wrote and directed Sunday in the Park with George, recounts his experiences from conception to Broadway, interspersed with interviews from the original cast and crew.

This is an absolutely riveting account of the artistic process through the eyes of Sondheim's key collaborator on Sunday in the Park with George. It's all written through first hand accounts and made me feel like I was right there through the challenges and triumphs of true artistic creation. This is a must read for all who are interested in the artistic process, not only devout Sondheim fans.

Sunday in the Park With George is not a favorite musical of mine, but I love a behind the scenes look at anything creative. This is an oral history style book, with many of the key players discussing the musical from the beginning, and written by Lapine, who wrote the book for the musical. This was fascinating, but there were so many people involved it would have been nice if they always included their role every time they were quoted.

Musical theatre nerds, rejoice! I just finished listening to the audiobook of James Lapine’s “Putting it Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I Created Sunday in the Park with George.” It’s a must read/listen. They have a main narrator who reads the text and the voice of James Lapine, and then a group of actors reading the quotes of all of the various people interviewed. Len Cariou is the voice of Stephen Sondheim and is fantastic. It includes music from the show played on the piano to underscore the themes being presented. Listen to the audio version. It made me love one of my all time favorite shows even more!
