I've never read a book like this. It builds in just the right way - slowly, creepily... it drips the terror in small fragments, but somehow, is not boring at all. The character building is perfect, and it felt SO real. I spent a fair bit of my younger years at my Dad's ski lodge, the creepy hotel vibes were real and this book really reminded me of it. All the different lives that have travelled through, all the things that have happened. So, in short, I loved this book. Will definitely be reading more King soon.

So dull. So much bad writing that just pulls you out of the story. Pages and pages of stuff that doesn't matter in the slightest.

I like this a lot better than Stanley Kubrick’s version, now I need to revisit that

Oh my god it was so well-written! I was gripped! But the incredibly liberal use of the n-word marks it down (it was 1977, I don't think there's an excuse. Yes, it was mostly used by evil forces being racist towards Hallorann. But come on... Surely he could have been more creative/thoughtful).
