Originally published in 1892 and it truly is amazing to see how relevant this work is to present day life. It paints a clear picture of the narrator’s descent into madness as her husband, brother, and those around her continue to dismiss her signs of depression/post-partum. She began expressing her needs but was quickly contradicted and forced to be confined in a room with an intricately designed yellow wallpaper. As her depression and mental health worsens, the room and its wallpapers slowly become her reality.

It certainly highlights the importance of one’s mental health as well as their support system. The support system our narrator had served only to tell her “no”, believing they knew what was best for her every step of the way.

I came across this book while browsing on TikTok and decided to read it since it was such a short book and I’m glad I did. This was super intriguing and really put into perspective how women’s mental health was treated back in the day (which wasn’t very good)
