I've been slowly reading this since college. So interesting and yet I find Campbell so difficult to read. I'll get through it one day.

Начал сначала читать, где-то пятую часть прочитал, потом в формате аудиокниги продолжил и закончил. Чтец просто бубнил мне в уши на скорости 1.7 все эти потоки сокровенных знаний Джозефа Кэмпбелла, а я все это воспринимал как белый информационный шум, занимаясь делами за компьютером. Бывало, прямо напрягался, пытаясь вслушаться и проникнуться повествованием, но тщетно.
У нас тут просто поток пересказов мифов, сказок и прочего эзотерического контента. В определенный момент появляются какие-то мастурбирующие боги, инцест направо и налево. Мерзость, короче. Проще просто прочитать пересказ содержания книги на википедии, а не тратить на это многие часы своей жизни.
Не ожидал, что мне такая научно-популярная работа вообще не зайдет. Вот вообще. Повествование построено через Ж. Там, где должно было быть увлекательно и познавательно, было скучно и уныло. Или же я просто потерял нить повествования и так и не смог ее найти, заблудившись в местном словоблудном лабиринте Минотавра.
Когда я читал детям сказки, меня всегда бесили эти повторения (по три раза одного и того же). Я бы с интересом узнал, зачем они так делали? Рассказывал ли автор книги об этом? Не факт. Может, я просто пропустил, а может и не рассказывал. Но в пересказах мифов регулярно эти рекурсии повторялись, и тоже бесили.
Мономиф май эсс, в общем. Плюнуть и растереть. Подобное чтиво - не моё. Узнал о книге от одного ооочень популярного в 2022 году "блогера". Свинью он мне подложил, конечно. Не забуду, не прощу :)

After years of hearing about the hero monomyth in every conceivable context, I decided to read the original Joseph Campbell for myself. For 70+ year-old scholarship, it holds up astoundingly well and reads fairly easily. Besides the actual hero's journey, the epilogue covers the hero's place in modern society, an issue that feels even more relevant in the Marvel age.
My main beef with actually reading this book is that Campbell's stringing together hundreds of myths makes for erratic prose, as he devotes large portions of each section to relating world myths that quickly run together and become overwhelming. Better transitions, not to mention a few summaries, would have created a FAR easier path for readers. Also, while the Freudean interpretation of dreams is interesting from a historical perspective, it does make parts of the book feel like an academic time capsule.

I’ve been so lied to this text says Nothing revolutionary and it’s far too forced in its ideas anyhow. Extremely disappointing and not worth finishing

This is a great book to understand narrative structures. Campbell takes a qualitative look at stories from cultures around the world, and breaks down mythological stories along a baseline.

This is one of those obligatory books for fantasy writers, so it was one of the first books I imported (so long ago that I don't even remember). It was, also, a kind of disappointment.
You see, this is a very interesting book, but it is much more about personal empowerment ("follow your bliss") and holistic thinking than about narrative or actual mythology. The Myth Cycle itself is interesting, of course, but the text does nothing to explain it that you couldn't find on a summary. There are great myths used as examples, but those are chopped to pieces.
So, if you think you should read this book to write better, don't. Go read Zen and The art of Writing or On Writing, it'll be better for your writing than this book.
