Twelfth Grade Night was super cute and I really enjoyed it! It’s a graphic novel retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night with a very diverse and queer cast. I originally thought that this was just going to be about kids doing the play but was pleasantly surprised when it wasn’t that. Lol.

A retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Set in high school, fall of Vi(ola)’s freshman year. Her first time not going to school with twin brother. Arden High is a fantastical school.

Positives
Diverse characters. Lots of humor. Good art.

Negatives
Somewhat confusing due to fantasy elements & big cast. Ending was too easy & predictable—typical retelling.

Overall
Cute, funny graphic retelling but nothing groundbreaking here.

Vi is heading to a new school without her twin brother, the first time they've not done something together. She's feeling out of her element and out of sorts being forced to handle all these changes on her own. But this new high school is nothing like what she expected. It's filled with actual fairies (wings and all), ghosts, and so many attractive people.

If you're a fan of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night or of high school romantic comedies, this is the book for you! It's a delightfully diverse cast with a rainbow of skin tones and queer identities. The book is FULL of Shakespeare references and nerdy homages. So fun and satisfying. It also avoids the HORRIBLE fate for Malvolio by making it lighter and having the perpetrators acknowledge their misdeeds.

Got this one bc it's illustrated by my favorite artist (and the illustrations are absolutely lovely). Cute and very queer, though I do wish it had been a bit more loyal to the play in some regards
