This was the story of an autistic woman dealing with adulthood and reflecting on her past. The first half of the book is friendly and sweet. The second half takes on a darker tone, but I honestly got more out of it. The main character makes you grateful to not be normal and I laughed quite a bit.

A super sweet novel about a woman uncovering her past. Eleanor takes some getting used to, but that’s besides the point - by the end of the book, I absolutely adored her. The first half of the book was slow-ish, but the second half of the book had me in a chokehold and I finished it in a day.

It’s hard to describe the book as “cozy”, because it deals with very serious topics, but I found it emotional and inspiring, and I imagine this one will be simmering in the back of my mind for a while.

Charming, hilarious, dark, shocking, and hopeful. As awkwardly endearing Eleanor puts together the pieces of her life, we experience her journey to self-awareness with sudden jolts of clarity just as she does. Detailed and sometimes graphic depictions of the events of her life reveal her numbness and hopelessness, her befuddlement at social expectations, and the slow dawning of realization that her past is not as fine as she once thought.

Despite its heavy subject matter, the story manages to be both amusing and heartwarming at its core. Eleanor is one of my favorite characters from recent memory, and I find myself hoping that she has continued to open her heart to happiness since the end of this story.

The first half of the book was almost unbearable for me. Eleanor was completely unlikeable, rude, annoying, and somewhat delusional. As she was exposed to more human interactions, she also became more human. At the end, she was able to work through a lot of her issues with therapy. I like books that provoke emotion, but make you feel good. This book did not provoke positive emotions in me. The back of the book said it’s “smart, warm, and uplifting”, when in reality it’s the exact opposite. I finished this book in a day, mostly because I just wanted to get it over with so I could read something else. I know I could have put it in my DNF pile, but I wanted to read it to the end to see if I would change my mind. I didn’t.

accidentally stumbled on another book about abuse this year! woo! (says while staring blankly into the distance)
this book is definitely one of those that isn't for everyone and is VERY not for some people
it's about a woman figuring her shit out while refusing to figure her shit out, so she can't actually figure anything out. if that sounds frustrating, well
yeawh

“It occurs to me that there are many things in life that I’ve never considered doing, Raymond. I suppose I hadn’t realized that I had any control over them. That sounds ridiculous, I know,” I said.
- page 158

You wouldn’t understand, of course, but the bond between a mother and child, it’s . . . how best to describe it . . . unbreakable. The two of us are linked forever, you see—same blood in my veins that’s running through yours. You grew inside me, your teeth and your tongue and your cervix are all made from my cells, my genes. Who knows what little surprises I left growing inside there for you, which codes I set running? Breast cancer? Alzheimer’s? You’ll just have to wait and see. You were fermenting inside me for all those months, nice and cozy, Eleanor. However hard you try to walk away from that fact, you can’t, darling, you simply can’t. It isn’t possible to destroy a bond that strong.”
