Midnight Duet is honestly perfect for those who love 80's rock bands, Phantom of the Opera, or both. 10/10 loved this story. This book was so much fun - the banter was great and the spice was hot. Honestly, I can't wait to read more from Jen Comfort! Thank you to Cassie for recommending this book to me as a 12 for 12 recommendation!

Extremely fun gender-swapped Phantom of the Opera-inspired romance novel! Erika Greene is a former Broadway diva who got scarred in a tragic accident, which is the only reason why she'd consider taking over this decrepit opera house in Paris, Nevada. When Christof Daae rents the opera house out for his German hair metal band's album practice, sparks fly. This was a delightful, funny story about two drama queens (one a theatre kid and the other a choir kid... whew) finding love in the most unlikely of circumstances. I had the best time reading this!

Midnight Duet has been my favorite book of 2024 so far. Within the first few pages I was busting up laughing. This is a perfect read for former theater kids & lovers of cheesy, campy rock music (I am both of these things).
I love a book with a curvy heroine. Erika is so sensual and witty. I really enjoyed her banter with Christof as well as her dynamic with the other members of the band. If you are a fan of a man who is slutty in a glam rock pirate sort of way, the MMC will have you melting.
I’m a bookseller and I’ve made it my personal agenda to suggest this book to as many people as I can. I seriously can not stress how badly you need to read this. It’s sweet, sexy and so funny.

I enjoyed the heck out of this book. The author has written a (VERY) loose gender swapped take on Phantom of the Opera (VERY loose - it is similar but only superficially), set outside Las Vegas and featuring a German hair metal rock band. The comedy is real (I found myself laughing aloud at multiple moments, particularly involving the side characters in Nachtmusik), the romance is sweet and the spice is spicy. Is it over the top at times? Oh yeah. But the novel is very self-aware and I enjoyed that the author is laughing at the rom-com genre (and at musical theature) just as much as loving it.
For the last year as I've explored my previously unknown love of rom-coms, I've been mentally BEGGING authors to break out of the tropes that seem overused. Not every MMC needs to be a secret millionaire/billionaire/alpha. Not every FMC needs to be in need of saving and needs to be pursued. Here Erika is pursuing Christof just as much (if not way more) than Christof pursues Erika. If there were any complaints I had, it would have been more time for the side characters to shine. More characters from the town of Paris, Nevada. And maybe a bit of a less predictable ending. These aren't complaints, though - more hopes for the future. Looking forward to future reads from Jen Comfort.

Taunting slow burn that was worth it. Last 20ish percent was gripping I powered through wanted to see how it ends. I'm also a suck for Phantom of the Opera so the nods to that story, while a little cringe at times, were fun.
