There’s an incident quite early on which was so ridiculous I was annoyed for quite a few pages before I realised its ridiculousness was a ‘clue’.

Overall, a satisfying story, but you have to be patient with it.  It’s all very readable, but the first half comes across as some sort of easy-readin’ fiction.  It’s basically people sitting down and talking to each other.  There’s even a fight scene where one of the combatants doesn’t even bother standing up.  The second half is much better.

Thematically, we’re in political territory, but it feels like these are the things Asimov can’t help writing about.  It’s a bit blurry and certainly not in allegory territory, where I think Asimov’s at his strongest.

However, he’s been quite honest on the cover.  This is literally a prelude to Foundation, bridging the gap from Robots and Empire.  Enjoy it for what it is, but don’t expect too much.
