The main plot is dealing with Charlie’s mental health and eating disorder and how recovery is not a straightforward path and others can’t ‘fix’ you, no matter how hard they try. You need to want to do it yourself and the journey will be bumpy but with help, supportive family and friends and the realisation that what’s going in your head is not your fault will lead to brighter days. It was definitely the hardest volume to read but personally the most impactful. Nick and Charlie’s relationship still continues to blossom with many cute and precious parts. Other plot lines are the big ‘I love you’ statement, Nick coming out to his dad and fully accepting oneself. There was absolutely nothing I disliked, it was perfection! So heartbreaking, heartwarming, lovely, cute, sad, emotional, EVERYTHING.
I’m so happy this is available to queer youth as it handles important topics so exceptionally well. There is great representation of different sexualities, genders, races and age groups. So so necessary. As I’ve said before, this series will save lives so thank you Alice Oseman once again. Thank you.
