I don't know how to feel about this book. I love that Tara has been portrayed so well. She's still the Tara we love and adore from Buffy. Shes shy and self-doubting but as the book goes on, she gets stronger and believes in herself. There's plenty of nods to the show throughout the book. Even characters with the same names (or partially). The character name "Moss Jedon" was not lost on me. I see what you did there, Ms. Poston! Also some of the chapters are named after episodes, which didn't go unnoticed either. There's lots of nostalgic pop culture references thrown in to take you back to 1998, but I felt it was a bit "much". Too try-hard. The book is officially canon which means it's officially part of the Buffyverse now and I'm like waaaaaah.

I like Ashley Poston — this just wasn’t for me. I think it’s a really tough thing to take such a beloved character and try to give her a whole new story. BTVS is my favorite show of all time so I was very excited to check this out. Ultimately I think these tv show spinoff books are just not my vibe.

Ahh so many good things about this book. 1st and foremost I just love seeing Tara as a fully formed character, and was really pleased that while her abuse wasn't glossed over by any means, we didn't play the trauma porn game. She got to be a whole ass person with likes and dislikes and a complicated relationship with magic, instead of the slightly idealized sidekick we see in the show (no shade to show Tara). There were a few things that bothered me in terms of what felt like anachronistic attitudes and conversations around queer identity but I am also willing to forgive some anachronism if it means we can have a queer story that isn't about trauma or coming out. Fair enough. However some of the pop culture references also had their 2020s goggles on, which made the story not feel like it was set in the 90s even though it was. In general, I really enjoyed the story, but it also in many ways felt more like fanfiction than a piece of buffy canon (although it does have some similarities to the energy of the boom comics era), especially given some of the small details that came up that were simply lore inconsistent (eg. Daphne at one point used the term hostile subterresterals, which is used by the initiative in season 4 of Buffy, problem with this is that Daphne's family is explicitly watcher affiliated, and the watchers council knew nothing about the existence of the initiative, to get super picky). Overall, a total joy to read regardless.
