a very good book, especially considering when it was written. it was way ahead of its time. the characters were incredibly realistic. they were lovable but definitely flawed. this book couldā€™ve been nonfiction because of how real and natural the characters and plot were.Ā

Just a perfect novel. This was my second time reading through, and it was just as powerful as the first read.Ā

Zora Neale Hurstonā€™s words are pure poetry. The story is a beautiful and complex character study, above all else. I would not change a thing. Who would?

Scholars agree that it is one of the finest books ever written, but since I am not a scholar, Iā€™ll simply say that it is one of the best books Iā€™ve ever read. Ā

Hurston was well ahead of her time, creating a protagonist like Janie. Itā€™s not to say that headstrong female characters didnā€™t exist in the past, but I could imagine some readers at the time might have been scandalized due to Janieā€™s fierce independence and the time she spent with three different men, which was so unabashed, I loved it.

It was a bit difficult to get into the writing style at first, but after a few chapters, the novel became an even richer text that beautifully shared the Black Southā€™s language and culture. In addition, there was a lot to think about in this novel, ranging from race (and, relatedly, colorism) to gender/sexuality to the legacy of slavery. All of these were inevitably tangled up with one another, which added so much detail to an already rich story.

It took way longer than it should have for me to have picked this one up, and while I didnā€™t completely enjoy the story in general, Hurston gave so much to the reader to contemplate. This is absolutely a book thatā€™s worth reading closely, and I can see why itā€™s assigned to students so regularly in the United States.

Another classic read - via audio - in 2023 and I'm so glad it was Their Eyes Were Watching God!

The audio of this novel is absolutely stunning and I cannot recommend it highly enough - Ruby Dee does a phenomenal job narrating Janie's voice and story and I was swept up in the novel from pretty much the first chapter.

I loved the exploration of race, family, and community in the post slavery American South, and had a lot to think about upon finishing this book. I appreciated the vernacular that was used throughout, but definitely think I would have struggled with this had I not been listening to the audio.Ā

Janie's story was heartbreaking but also so beautiful and full of hope. I both loved and hated how things turned out at the end, and can absolutely see why this novel and Zora Neale Hurston's writing has stood the test of time.
