I have read much better biographies of the founinv fathers. This one focused a lot on slave ownership and skipped over many of the details of Washington's life.

Certainly a much more representative, reasoned look at Washington than, as Coe calls them, generations of "Thigh Men" biographers. He wasn't a god. He wasn't a benevolent philosopher king. He was a guy who told lies, lost battles and owned slaves. This book, more than any other biography, asks you to grapple with the good, the bad and the "huh?".

On a different note: I think I would have followed this more easily if I'd had a physical copy rather than the audiobook. Lotta dates. Lotta stats.

After a bold introduction, this ends as a fairly standard biography of Washington.
