This world revolves around two types of people. People who have Silver blood and extraordinary gifts and people who have Red blood, who are the subjects and servants. The main character, Mare is a Red blooded person who happens to also have abilities. I loved this book. I feel like so many people have already read this and I am late to the party, but there is just something about a dystopian where the character have powers. I am almost always certain I’ll love it! Ive already ordered book two. Can’t wait to pick it up.

I’m not gonna rate because I don’t think it’s necessarily the book, I think I’m just on the other side of the age spectrum where I can’t read this anymore. I think middle school me would’ve eaten this up but 23 year old me can’t. But I adore Victoria Aveyard so I really wanted to like it—I think it’s just a me think with my age. This is the second book I DNFed this year

Ok, so I don't know if the first time I read this I had read some REALLY good books before and this time I read some not as good books before and so this book seems better than before or if I wasn't in the mood for it before and was now or maybe because I knew the end for sure and didn't have to be disappointed by the predictable ending. In any case I thought this book was much better the second time around. I reread it because I didn't remember anything that happened in it and I wanted to read book 2. It's tropey at times (I let go the breath I didn't know I was holding) and borrows from all sorts of genres but even this second reading it gripped me and I didn't want to put the book down. I actually really like the super powers blended in with post post apocalyptic dystopia and also the royal drama stuff.

A huge downfall would probably have to be how predictable it was. I pretty much nailed every twist and secret in this book! While I do love predicting events, I also love it when an author can surprise the absolute s**t out of me!!! However that's extremely rare these days as I overthink way too much when I read!
It's pretty much your average story about a girl who came from not much but then realised she was very important and special, however soon found out she wasn't alone and not so special anymore and blah blah blah! I also found this plot similar to other books I've read.

  • More teen focused as far as the style of reading
  • Would have liked more of a deep dive into the characters emotions and processes
  • Overall great plot
  • Very similar to divergent or hunger games

I was honestly pleasantly surprised with Red Queen. I know this is a love it or hate it sort of series, and I was seriously expecting to fall into the hate it category. Turns out, I don't really fall into either but I still enjoyed it. It took me a little bit to get into it, but I ended up having a good time reading it.

There's a lot about Red Queen that felt stereotypical to its genre, but there was also a lot that didn't. The book moves at a fast pace and I never really found it boring. There were a few twists that happened where I tossed the possibility around in my head but ended up dismissing it so when they did happen, I was still kind of shocked. I both suspected the climax but was still surprised when it happened because I didn't think the book had the balls to do it.

I liked Mare. This feels like a rarity because she doesn't really stand out in the shuffle of female young adult protagonists, and yet I still liked her. She wasn't always the smartest of people and sometimes made dumb decisions, but she could have been way worse and didn't annoy me the way several other of her ilk did. The supporting cast was pretty good as well. No one really stands out to be as that poorly written of a character. Everyone seemed to fit.

The most jarring thing I think was this was definitely one of those worlds where they really want you to know how shitty the main character's people have it, so it gets a little over the top that, sometimes, you can't really take it as seriously as you should. It's nothing that's too distracting, but the unrealistic class divide just stands out so much, especially with most of the Silvers just being ridiculously asshole-ish.

I don't know if I'm just getting old and bitter, but I can sense the possibility of this series going down the crapper. For now, though, I will keep myself hopeful and look forward to the rest of it.
