This feels like Hunger Games but without the Games mixed with the Selections surrounding princes as love interests mixed with the X-men for the superpowers. It mostly reminds me of the Hunger Games, because how is Mare's situation is oddly close to Katniss's. I found the main love interests without sparkling personalities, but I liked Maven and sometimes Cal, too. Liked the descriptions of superpowers and the abilities the Silvers had.
Though I wanted some more interaction, perhaps Evangeline becoming one of the good guys, and befriending Mare, it didn't happen. A plot twist can be expected easily, and I've thought of that briefly when Maven said that he'll join the Scarlet Guards, but still, enjoyable. And I liked the bloodbase thing, where they stored all the blood and how Maven helped Mare out of her situation that would've put her to death. Wanted a scientific fiction backup for all those Silver and Reds divide, and what was the detailed backstory before it. Also, wanted Kilorn to be Mare's love interest, but it seems he is in the friend-zone (they didn't do any romantic stuff, like kissing or whatever) but maybe that'll appear in the next book where Kilorn is in Gale's position in the Hunger Games. Also, I wanted the more Hunger Games stuff like the details of lush and vivid and luxurious things the rich people did, but not enough for what I've been expecting.

I feel like this book invented the concept of "plotwist" and moral greyness cause GIRLLL WHAT THE HELL. also every single character is just so so So INTERESTING and also balls to the wall insane in ways that speak to me. they could use a therapist or two. (also reading this book AFTER you've read the whole saga is absolute clownery. they are all so silly and deranged <3). all in all if you like actually morally grey MCs, a fascinating worldbuilding, savage comebacks and compelling character dynamics, and very VERY cool villains👀... I feel like this is your book :)

this was a fun read and i’m excited to read not only the other books in the series but more by the author. the main character isn’t annoying, there are little plot twists everywhere. but i do have to say the ending was a bit disappointing, it wasn’t as intense as it should’ve been and i find that common throughout the book. moments that should’ve been tense or suspenseful we’re lacking , and so was the world building. it was so inconsistent. how do motorcycles, color tv screens , cameras and underground trains exist in this universe but they still send letters and talk like their from the 1800’s but also still have balls but then wear boots and jeans occasionally? i wish it made more sense because then maybe the book wouldve been a better read, i hope the other books are less disappointing.

Heard about this book for years but never picked it up thinking it wasn't up my alley, boy was I wrong.

I think the book makes a great statement about the lack of seperation of the government and media.

There were multiple twists and turns I was NOT SEEING AT ALL.

Only took off .25 from a perfect score for one solid reason: the book focuses a lot on racism while also excluding BIPOC from the conversation. Even the Reds are described as pale and none of the Silvers are described as having pigment in their skintone. It's just a lot of white people fighting each other over crappy powers.
