This story is based on an Athabascan Indian legend told to the author by her mother. It is about two old women who are left behind by their tribe during a time of extreme famine and how they survived.

A quick, feel-good story. I would have liked more details on how Ch’idzigyaak and Sa’ survive and thrive against the harsh winter and The People’s abandonment. Also, The People say they complain a lot during their journey, but I didn’t get that. At any rate, I did enjoy the story. My favorite part could be the women reminiscing about their old lives and how they always had to fight against their peers to survive, and so they had to channel that spirit to do the same now.

First read:  Great, easy to read story from an Alaska Native.  Follows the hardships, but ultimate survival, of two old women who are left behind when the rest of The People find themselves in a hard winter and the weak are left behind.

Second read: I forgot how much I enjoyed this story!  Probably getting older and working through hardships has altered my perspective.  Wonderful lesson.
