I really wanted to love this book. I really, really did. But my god, this thing was a freaking slog to get through! This is definitely a huge downgrade in quality when compared to the first two entries in the series. This book felt like 500 pages of set-up for nothing. Hyperion followed a similar pattern, but the individual tales of all the pilgrims were fascinating. The main characters aren't particularly interesting either; although, A. Bettik and de Soya are a pleasant break from the bore that is Raul and Aenea. And while we're on the subject of those two,why did Simmon's insist on adding a age gap relationship to this whole fiasco?! Technically, Aenea and Raul don't really get together in this book, but even the random mentions of their impending romance felt weird. I'm glad I read this book, if only so I could move on to the next one. 3.75 ⭐ out of 5. Hopefully the next one is better 🤷♀️
