One of the things I'm really glad about, that I realized while reading this book is that I didn't grow up in a patriarchal family. My dad has not always been emotionally available, but he doesn't push anyone from showing their emotions. My mom wanted my brother and I to be emotionally available. I cannot speak of my older brother, but I have been secured in my masculinity since childhood, and I think that was because I grew up in a family that lived through second wave feminism and my mother is a feminist.

Who will cry for the little boy?
Lost and all alone.
Who will cry for the little boy?
Abandoned without his own?
Who will cry for the little boy?
He cried himself to sleep.
Who will cry for the little boy?
He never had for keeps.
Who will cry for the little boy?
He walked the burning sand
Who will cry for the little boy?
The boy inside the man.
Who will cry for the little boy?
Who knows well hurt and pain
Who will cry for the little boy?
He died again and again.
Who will cry for the little boy?
A good boy he tried to be
Who will cry for the little boy?
Who cries inside of me

This was a very solid feminist book that tackles the topic of helping men break out of patriarchy and how it hold them back too.
My only issue with the book is towards then end where Hooks last argument reads like she’s putting the onus on women to create the path for men to follow in order to change.
