I loved the last half of the book, there was more futbol, more exploration of the challenges Camila is facing (family, relationships, career dreams), all while shedding light on the day-to-day for women in Argentina.

It is terrifying to see the trend of missing women show up in multiple countries, though not surprising. Having recently read more about Argentina's history, it was interesting to see the ways things have shifted (in positive ways), though still lag behind in others. This story feels, at its heart, a love letter to these women (those still here and those not), celebrating their continued dreams and ambitions, pursuing them even at risk to their lives and agency.

This is a profoundly hopeful story, even as oppression and other horrors are detailed here. Do check the content warnings (only one scene).

Do recommend it - it's a slow burn, as it spends too much time on the romantic relationship with Diego for the first half. But once he leaves, the story opens up and it's definitely worth your time.

4.5/5 stars. This book was fierce! I think my lack of sports knowledge may have left me with the tiniest of disconnects, but the overall story was phenomenal as was the leading character, Camila. I appreciated how the author was able to make Camila complex and independent, while also intertwining the way in which violence against women was constantly present in her life. Definitely worth the read, but a content warning is necessary for the above mentioned violence against women, discussion of murdered and missing women, and domestic violence.

An inspiring coming-of-age story of a woman in Argentina who must decide how to prioritize her goals. I loved the romance in this book, and even more how Camila persevered and was able to put her future first, despite pressures from all sides. As an Argentine American author with Palestinian and Syrian ancestry, Yamile Saied Méndez brought incredible perspectives on race and colorism, as well as sexism and more, to this tale.

a great YA read — if I knew any teenage girls, I'd recommend it to them in a heartbeat. it's the story of a young soccer player in Argentina growing up and falling in love and pursuing her dreams, it's fiery and exuberant and moving.
