This book was waaay different than I thought it was going to be based on the cover, and I didn’t read anything about it before reading it, which I think led to an interesting surprise. It definitely gave me some Miyazaki horror vibes, but I still enjoyed it. The art was also a bit different than I expected it to be, but I still liked it.

Salt Magic was a gorgeous middle grade graphic novel about family, sacrifice, and love. i loved the magic systems in play, as well as the backstory of the witches and Vonceil’s family.

the pacing was a little off to me, and i wish the minor conflicts had been stronger, but overall this was a fun, quick read and i will definitely be following the illustrator’s work in the future!

Salt Magic is a short but sweet tale about growing up and overcoming the desire to stay young forever. I adored the protagonist, Vonceil, from the very beginning – she has such a strong personality and it’s impossible not to root for her.

I bought this book for its stunning cover. The artwork inside isn’t quite as beautiful, but it’s expressive and full of character. It’s clear that a great deal of care has gone into the designs – from the characters to the architecture to the props and vehicles. It’s a well-crafted graphic novel all round :)
