I gotta be honest, I was pretty apprehensive going into this book because of the whole “torture island” and “vivisection” of it all. But— I think Cole balanced some of the horror and pain with the growth at the end, it just felt a little slow getting there. I still think there is a lot Chase has to make up for in torture island, but how Cole deconstructed his brainwashing did help make that easier for us the reader. And, the history of this story was compelling and made the ending all the more satisfying.

I was dreading reading this one since it was about Declan Chase. I like a good villain redemption story but wasn't interested in Declan in the least (ugh, so much torture in this book). It ended up being better than I expected. But I'm always annoyed at the consent issues in every IAD book (not always about sex although in this one it was). These are too modern to have the issues they do.

This is definitely one of those, “you don’t need to be a good book to be a good time.” It wasn’t really something I would choose to read but I enjoyed it. I would check out the other books in the series

This one was another really long one but worth the effort. I don't know that I can write alot about this one. When it ended all I felt was happiness. I loved the book as a whole.

I adored Declan. I loved him. And I liked Regin a whole lot more than I expected. I loved all the insight from the scenes/memories of her being with Aiden and then all the reincarnations. It was so beautiful and heartbreaking how she found him just to lose him in the end each time.

I'll admit it was difficult at times just how much hatred Declan had for all immortals. Specifically how he treated Regin, though the worst done to her wasn't by his hand directly but the fact he was an accomplice to it all simply by the fact he captured and brought her to his prison was a hard pill to swallow. And though it was easier to understand when we get the full picture of his history that he was essentially brainwashed into hating immortals and had survived an attack by some of the worst of the Lore who killed his family. So to say he he was prime pickings for such a role in The Order would be an und. Was it an excuse? Maybe a little. But it could never fix what he had done or had ordered done by another's hand. He knew this too. I was glad that he was ready to face those who wanted his blood for the deeds in his past. I respected it. Did it make him perfect? Nah. But he atleast knew he had done many wrongs and many he could never absolve himself from but he wasn't hiding or denying it.

My personal favorite things about this book was the side characters. Aside from the usual fun of Nïx and her bag of crazy we had Natalya the Dark Fey, Brandr another Bezerker and the teenage halfling vampire/phantom Thad (who was just adorable!) And of course the fascinating Lothaire...so mysterious. These characters added so much to the story. And provided much entertainment at times.

I also had an idea of how this would play out by the end with Declan's story with him being mortal and I was right, but I was happy I was. It was an easy assumption once you know the history of Aiden.

And even though I loved Regin's scenes with Aiden at the opening of the book and hated when he died... I truly loved her with Declan. I wish we had gotten more scenes of them at peace with one another like we did at the end. Everything was just settling between them when it ends. And I only say this because their relationship throughout the book was so contemptuous and combative that it was a little sad to continuing to experience it even so deep into the book. Even though I knew the reasoning behind their behavior it still disappointed me a little that we didn't get more happy Regin/Declan there. But isn't that the problem with any book? So I can only hope to see them again in later books.

I definitely hope to see Brandr get a book down the road.
