I love Barbara Kingsolver so it’s no surprise I liked this book. Set in Appalachia, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that this story heavily revolves around opiate abuse. As an English nerd, I appreciate what Kingsolver did with transforming a Dickens novel into this story. It works amazingly well. Also as a Virginian who lived in Tennessee for a minute, I loved the familiarity of the setting and of the people. Personally, I felt the ending (like the last 5-10 chapters) dragged a bit, but I understand why.

Despite taking forever to finish this book, I really did enjoy it. It’s a story that needs to be told and a story that needs to be heard. My dad hates his southern accent. I love it so very much. I told him it sounds like a warm hug. So much of what’s in this book, minus the addiction, is what my parents have went through—the abuse, the poverty, the foster homes, the being raised by family that aren’t your parents. These people have been forgotten, kicked on, and dismissed. It’s given me a new perspective. It was a slow book and quite depressing. It was tragedy after tragedy after tragedy. But I am happy to say it had a satisfying ending with a hopeful note.

The first half of this book was my favorite. I was very hopeful for Demon throughout until a certain point where he did not seem to want to help himself.
The whole point of this is obviously breaking this cycle of abuse that takes a firm grasp on people who are impoverished and these people are taken advantage of to an insane degree.
I wanted things to move a bit quicker as Demon got older and I think this would have had a greater impact if it did move faster. I also find issue with typing up all of the loose ends in a nice neat little bow. Sometimes part of moving on from your past involves leaving it behind completely, and I don’t think every single of the many characters had to be addressed at the end of this novel. All of this in mind, I have found myself recommending this book to a lot of friends so I must like it.

I can see why it won a Pulitzer. Remarkable imagery, authentic voice, themes mostly came around to neat closure.
Unfortunately, there were excessive graphic descriptions of drug use and sex. Every imaginable locker room crude sexual innuendo. It’s too bad the very good descriptive capabilities of the author was applied to trash you don’t want in your mind as well as nature and life.
