Katya and her Meema are spending another normal summer at their cottage in Alaska, when a chance accident leaves Katya face-to-face with the biggest creature she's ever seen... an enormous kodiak bear, soon to become her closest friend. This story was wholesome and gorgeously illustrated. This is a great example as to why graphic novels work so well as children’s literature. They provide young readers with compelling storylines driven by words and pictures in ways that will encourage both a love of reading and an appreciation for art. The events never overwhelm the narrative and the magically implausible friendship between Katya and Kodi remains the focus of this story.

This story pans from Alaska to Seattle and the watercolor illustrations captured that beautifully. I felt as though I was watching a Pixar short film.

Read this to my 9 year old for bedtime last night. We both liked it a lot, especially since we were on a train coming home from Seattle at the time- we knew the city and could relate to the images. Very cute, beautiful visuals. Good for elementary school kids interested in graphic novels.
