Week 52 Book 54
This Telling by Cheryl Strayed
Rating: 2/5

Another one from the Out of Line collection, this is a story of a woman who gives up a baby in her teenage years, and her life after that. Had potential, but was very rushed. Can miss.

Whew, what an emotional read. This short story swept me up and kept me interested the whole time. I felt for Geraldine and modern technology is making it very hard nowadays to keep some skeletons in the closet, so to speak. Overall this was an exploration of what it might mean to be in a situation where you can't decide for yourself but are 'forced'/talked into making a decision based on someone else's ideas. In this case it was Geraldine having to give up her baby for adoption when she gave birth at only 17/18. I liked that we got to follow her throughout her life
Spoilerand eventually getting to make peace with her decision through meeting her granddaughter. Even though she did have more children later on, she never forgot about her first daughter. I think it was quite sad she never got to meet her again but at least she was able to meet her granddaughter.

This was incredibly powerful. I've only ever read [b:Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail|12262741|Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail|Cheryl Strayed|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1453189881l/12262741._SY75_.jpg|17237712] by [a:Cheryl Strayed|155717|Cheryl Strayed|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1445820056p2/155717.jpg], but I loved her writing despite being dragged into reading it by my book club. She is talented with words.

In just a few pages she managed to convey the fear, apprehension, betrayal and loss associated with an unwanted or planned for teen pregnancy. She then went on to explain how it could haunt your life and only stop doing so when you allowed yourself to grieve and share that grief with those you love.

This was just “okay” for me. I typically enjoy Cheryl Strayed stories but this one didn’t read the same for me as it seems to have touched others. To me, it felt like talking to an old friend who gave a child up for adoption and just hearing about it years later. No emotion, just facts.
