Women with Big Eyes is a collection of short stories, most lasting no more than a few pages, that tell the stories of dozens of women living in Puebla, Mexico in recent history.
Mastretta did something really special with this book. The stories are so short, often just a snippet here or there of the featured woman's life, but the richness and depth of the storytelling of those short snippets are really impressive. Reading this book felt like sitting with your grandmother and hearing her tell stories of all the women she's known during her lifetime. I smiled or chuckled at so many of these women's stories, and also found myself feeling moved by the lovely writing.
The version of the book I have has the English translation as well as the original Spanish text, and I can see myself turning to the Spanish version of these short snippets as a way to practice Spanish as well.
