A bunch of male friends--here, significant historical figures, including Socrates--get together and decide that each is to give his finest speech in praise of Eros, the god of love. They go around, each giving a speech describing the nature, quality, and/or object of love. I really enjoyed reading this short book, and could probably stand to go over it again to really grasp the finer points. I also love the idea of a bunch of male friends getting together to discuss philosophy. Seems highly unlikely in our current culture, which is a shame.

I also want to add that it is incredible that this book is still studied and read. I think it reflects that we still have no idea how to define or conceive of love, and that the ideas floated in this book are still hotly debated. Shows how insignificant a few millennia is in the context of philosophical evolution.

We read The Symposium in history class as an addition to the mandatory books just because my teacher loved to read bits out loud. I think I have my copy lying around somewhere with paragraphs marked and notes written in it on what my teacher found important or interesting or how he interpreted it, which is so interesting to look back on!
