Satisfyingly dark and unflinching. The kind of book that takes off.

This book!! My enjoyment of this book is partly due to the fact that I am a psychology student (and have written an essay about it). I was able to enjoy it more when my brain was making connections to things I've learnt which is why it is 4 stars. But also it is partly to do with my enjoyment of the exploration of female anger, it wasn't the banging on the chest screaming "how could you?" but rather more sinister and I really enjoyed that. As well as the things it made me question, it really took me on a trip and I was deeply invested. The protagonist goes from being the victim to the perpetrator in a way and it was entertaining to see how I reacted to the things she did.

I think as an everyday reader I would give it 3 stars because whilst enjoyable, the whole Harpy aspect of it all felt disorientating at times and I was just like "ma'am...now what is this?" Especially with that ending?!? The ending was a bit too ambiguous for me but I could sort of guess what happened (?).

I went into this expecting horror vibes, a modern tale tinged with mythology. Instead, it's a flat and boring story about a woman whose husband is cheating on her and the strains that infidelity puts on their marriage.

If you're looking for a book that fits the bill of folklore/mythology intersecting with contemporary life, read The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni.
