I wanted to read LEGENDS OF THE NORTH CASCADES as a resident of Northwest Washington and a fan of that national park in particular. I had seen a few negative reviews before I began reading, though, and so I was somewhat skeptical of the book going in. I mainly chose it because I planned to hike at Cascade Pass trail over this past weekend and thought a North Cascades inspired book would feel appropriate to go along with it.
Let me tell you: this book definitely references areas in Northwest Washington! Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Highway 20, Wenatchee, and even Everett (

I was having trouble with the story’s voice (stupid little annoyances like the MC dad calling his 7yo daughter’s shirt a “blouse”, nursing kittens as suckling on the cat’s “teats”, and lots of description devoted to football and the Marines). Then I found some reviews alluding to a violent sexual assault scene, and I’m sorry, but I’m not here for male writers and that worn-ass plot device. DNFed it.

Dad and daughter story of loss, grief, adventure, and survival. Intertwined with ancient stories of people who suffered in the cold mountains living before modern conveniences. Father trying to escape the grief of life, rejects all but his daughter to live off the land where they can't be hurt by losing or loving anyone. He gets injured during a snowstorm and ultimately realizes that the people in his life are important.
