I enjoyed the first two novels, the third not so much, the rating reflects the omnibus as a whole.

The Broken Earth Trilogy was an absolute masterpiece, so I'm a bit surprised how little I liked this one. N.K. Jemisin had so much to learn still when she wrote these books. First of all the entire series is written in first person, each book from another's characters point of view. Which makes for "all tell, no show" and also deprives the reader of a lot of interesting insight into the greater world and the other character. The world building is interesting and unique, but the laser focus on one character at a time didn't allow for much exploration of that. I liked it well enough to read the entire brick of a book, but that was partially driven by the hope that some big revelation or twist was coming to make it all worth it. Sadly that did not happen. I really wanted to like this book more, but it just didn't happen. If you want to read something by the author for the first time, get The fifth season. She truly shines there.
