A beautiful, tragic novella that's all the more heart-wrenching because the reader can see what's coming long before the protagonist can, and you wish you could do something to stop the damage about to be wrought on the characters' lives. This is a story about the ugliness of humanity, its ignorance and its hate, but also its beauty and capacity for love, compassion, empathy. Fawver has really managed to bleed out the emotions in story and reader alike. His work has a strong message without being didactic or ham-fisted, and it was a pleasure to find myself in his world.
