I have read only another prequel 'The Academy' and yet to get into the full length novels by Robert Dugoni. Both the books serve as appetizers and the series shows lots of promise. Going by the reviews, I am sure he delivers too.
This short prequel adds another dimension to Tracy's character. Her cool and composed nature to dispel a hostage situation.
Though the book is short all the required ingredients for a thriller are there. The book would have been shorter if the author had not repeated Tracy's actions in the journalist's report !

Nice prequel about how Tracy Crosswhite became a detective. Enjoyable, quick read.

Third Watch is the second novella and it takes place six years after the first. Tracy Crosswhite has been on patrol ever since she graduated the police academy, no closer to her goal of becoming a homicide detective... This novella tells us what she did that helped her take the first step towards that goal. This novella is a lot more action-packed and suspenseful as Tracy suddenly finds herself in the middle of a hostage situation without backup, and it was interesting to see the events develop and Tracy's personality shine through while she handles the situation. The focus on the mistreatment and harrassment many female cops have to deal with is important, and this element was well incorporated into the plot. Nolasco is still as despicable as always, but then again his character is ment to be this way. I do hope we won't see too much of him in the future books!

Loved getting to see Tracy back then

I read the Tracy Crosswhite novels (book 9 was the most current) first and then found this one that is set years prior, and is about how she gets her first medal of valor. I loved getting to see her work this case and set up back here. This was a great little addition/prequel for the series and just makes me love Tracy’s character more.

In case the first book hadn’t already given me respect for the character Dugoni has created in Tracy Crosswhite, this second short story in the series confirms it. Third Watch follows the continuation of Tracy’s journey in the police force 6 years after the end of The Academy. Still on patrols 6 years later, she is accompanied by a journalist digging into a story on women in the force and whether they are blocked from promotions based on gender. As a woman in a male dominated company, I loved how Tracy handled this and in the end allowed her actions to speak the loudest with her brilliant handling of a dangerous hostage situation. I maintain my excitement to dig into the first full length novel of the series!

This is a very short story focusing primarily on a single event that brings some very favorable attention to Tracy. My problem with this short is that there's so much time spent either retelling what has just happened (through a newspaper article) or not doing much of anything but taking up space.

If you loved the other books in the series, it may be worth your time but I would have been fine skipping it.

I like a good Tracy Crosswhite story but this one seemed like “filler”. It didn’t have any really pivotal storyline points.

Seattle Police Officer Tracy Crosswhite has been a patrol officer for six years despite having applied for several promotions. She’s assigned a freelance journalist as a ride along following a damaging exposé by a television reporter citing sexism within the department. Tracy begins her night shift, referred to as third watch, when she responds to a domestic disturbance call that immediately escalates.

This isn’t your typical short story where you’re left feeling like you wanted more of something. It nimbly sets up the political situation the department and Tracy is mired in before she answers that call and then shifts to the tension and suspense surrounding a volatile domestic call. Everything that happens next kept me edgy and riveted. And, it delivered an ending that had me smiling. Now I’m ready for the first full length book in what promises to be a great series. This was perfect.
