This was a interesting read. I loved the topic and discussions about sexuality, race and racism and homophobia and seeing characters growth. I just didn’t love how this was like an action thriller. Like I didn’t really care about the fathers getting revenge and it was just to action movie for me. The mystery was good, but wasn’t shocking to me. I also didn’t really feel much emotion because I feel like we didn’t get to know the characters. It also took me way too long to remember who was who. This was also really funny at times especially Bobby Lee.

This book was very well written. The descriptions of people, places, and things jumped off the page. The topic is a very raw and real problem in our society today and the story was told authentically. There were some specifically placed comedic quotes to break up the heaviness. It was a great book I'm interested in other books by this author.

Reviewing this book is difficult for me, but here it goes:
I won't summarize what this book's about as others have done a good job of that. I will instead say a few important things without spoiling anything. This book is emotionally heavy and very violent. I cried half a dozen times during the first 50 pages. The second chapter has a funeral. It's just VERY heavy in the beginning, but if you can get past that the rest of the novel is a sprawling, fast paced revenge thriller similar to John Wick. I don't understand the 1 star reviews - the story is good, the characters are interesting, there's multiple (semi-obvious) plot twists, and the main duo changes over time.

Anyone complaining about "only the lgbtq+ characters have violence done against them" obviously didn't read the book because that is painfully untrue. One huge gripe I have with this book though is how many grammatical errors there are. It feels lie the editor phoned it in at points. The's and a's are omitted when they shouldn't be or doubled, and actions will be talked about and then talked about again like "Ike put his phone on the table..." Then 2 minutes later "Ike put his phone on the table." For me, it took me out of the story multiple times. And it's not just once or twice but constantly throughout the novel. It has the most writing mistakes of any book I've ever read actually. So I give this book a solid 4 for story but it drops to 3.5 for all the writing mistakes.

In short, it's a gripping and violent narrative that I can absolutely see as a movie or limited series. Would probably work better in that setting honestly. If you're emotionally sensitive like me expect to put the book down a lot to process what's happening.

Warning: do not read this book unless your stomach is iron-clad, or you're okay with skipping big chunks of pages. Seriously, pay attention to the tags.

I wanted to be kind to this book. I wanted to accept that this was going to be a difficult book club read that was gritty and uncomfortable and dark. The blurb was amazing, had a great hook, interesting title, the whole nine yards. Objectively the dialogue was a little flat and the characters felt a little wooden at the beginning, but it would get better, right? I would get through this even if I had to skim or skip scenes, it would be fine, right? Right??? I was optimistic. I was open-minded.

I did not like this book. I did not enjoy this book. The first 100ish pages were fine, mostly. I could accept the racism and homophobia as just part of what it's like in parts of Virginia. The middle is where it started to sour. I especially did not like the last 100 pages of it where it turned into full-on revenge porn. It's graphic, folks. There's no art, just blood. No redemption arc, just death. I think Cosby wanted the final scene to be profound or something, but by that point there's no tying it up into a near little package and calling it hunky-dory.
