I’m conflicted about this book. The writing style really brought the characters to life and I felt like I was in the Deep South - it’s clearly something the author is very familiar with. The main characters were just kinda the worst though. It felt like “old men finally attempt to discover empathy while also going on a violent and murderous rampage” and I’m clearly biased, I’ve grown up in a very liberal and accepting household, but I feel like that just added to my frustration with these characters. In the middle part they’re looking for information and whether people help them or not, they just keep fighting w everyone. Most of the LGBTQ+ people in this book feature as plot devices to further the main characters’ journey, and I can’t say much more than that about the depictions of women either. I get that the author was making some big Statements about racism, homophobia, toxic masculinity, etc., but it was a lot for me. I didn’t have a good time.

This was a interesting read. I loved the topic and discussions about sexuality, race and racism and homophobia and seeing characters growth. I just didn’t love how this was like an action thriller. Like I didn’t really care about the fathers getting revenge and it was just to action movie for me. The mystery was good, but wasn’t shocking to me. I also didn’t really feel much emotion because I feel like we didn’t get to know the characters. It also took me way too long to remember who was who. This was also really funny at times especially Bobby Lee.

The plotting was fantastic. The characters felt so human and real. And the writing was affecting and insightful.

The narration really sucked me in, too.

Excellent all around.

This book was very well written. The descriptions of people, places, and things jumped off the page. The topic is a very raw and real problem in our society today and the story was told authentically. There were some specifically placed comedic quotes to break up the heaviness. It was a great book I'm interested in other books by this author.
