The DOG
Human best friend

I have always felt for Bob since I read "The One And Only Ivan". He is so cute and curious. And so adventurers.

This story is a wonderful follow-up to The One and Only Ivan - only this time the narrator is Ivan’s best friend: a mutt named Bob. This story was a wonderful, child friendly exploration of forgiveness, trust, and connection with others and with oneself. A must read for children and adults struggling with baggage that skews their perception of themselves and others. I loved this story. “Ivan and I sigh. It’s exhausting, all this responsibility, this worry. This love.”

I LOVED The One and Only Ivan (so much that I used it as a read aloud for my fifth graders) so I was SO HAPPY when I saw that Katherine Applegate was writing a story from the perspective of the rowdy dog, Bob, from that book.

This book was just as heartwarming as the first. Full of great learning moments and adorable friendships. Friends protecting friends! We see all of the animals protecting and helping each other during a hurricane and it really made me smile to see them protecting one another. This book was absolutely adorable and wonderful!

In comparison to The One and Only Ivan there is no competition at all. I thought that maybe this would be one that I would read right after The One and Only Ivan with kids if they loved it, but this is definitely one I would have the kids read on their own.

A solid sequel to one of the most heartwarming books of all time. It didn't hit me as hard, emotionally, but there are many good messages contained that are worth learning for young readers. I also really liked the way Bob's journey with forgiving himself was portrayed.

Even better than Ivan's story! Great jumping off points for discussion and upredictable storyline (if you don't read the blurb which gives way too much away.
